It occurred to me recently that I haven't written a new blog post in a while. Today seemed like the right moment, especially since a client had to cancel a session due to a fever. So I thought I’d take the opportunity to share some thoughts here as well, this time about mixing AI-generated music.


What happens when an AI song arrives at the studio

AI music mixing is no longer the same as it was even a year ago.


A client recently sent me a demo and asked if I could work as a producer for a new song. The track itself was actually quite interesting and musically good, but you could hear immediately that the foundation had been created with AI.


The sound felt cold.A little hollow. Everything was technically there, but something was missing.


I listened to the track a few times and ideas started forming very quickly. I got that familiar studio feeling that this could really work if a few things were adjusted.

And that’s exactly what happened. I spent most of the evening shaping the track.


When the producer can’t change everything

There was one small challenge though.

The client had not ordered a full production package, but a lighter service. That meant I had to keep most of the AI-generated instruments as they were.


Ideally I would have rebuilt much more of the musical foundation.

But we worked with what we had.


After the production adjustments were done, we moved on to recording vocals. The session went smoothly and we captured a strong set of vocal takes. At that point everything felt completely normal, just like working on any other song.


When the mix sounds great in the studio… but nowhere else

I finished the first mix at the studio and honestly felt quite satisfied with it.

Just to be sure, I decided to listen to the track again at home using my laptop and a pair of cheap everyday headphones.


And that’s when reality hit.

The balance completely collapsed.The mix sounded messy and heavy. My first thought was simple: maybe I was just tired.


The next day I continued working on the mix. In the studio everything sounded good again. I made some adjustments based on the notes I had written at home.

But when I checked the mix again later, the exact same problem appeared.

At that point the classic thought started creeping in:

Did I completely mess this up?


Why AI music mixes often fall apart

After digging deeper into the issue, the reason became surprisingly clear.

AI-generated instruments often do not follow the natural energy distribution of traditional music production.


In a controlled studio environment the mix can sound large and impressive, but once the playback system changes: the stereo image collapses, the low end shifts, the midrange starts stacking on top of itself


When that happens, the mix built around AI instruments quickly loses its balance.


In other words, the song works in one listening environment but fails to translate to the real world.


A different approach to mixing AI music

At that point I had to change my approach completely.

I started rebuilding the mix almost from scratch:


  • reducing excessive stereo width

  • creating more space between instruments

  • adding MIDI instruments to support the arrangement

  • leaving significantly more frequency space in the mix


Many AI instruments are already extremely wide and very dense in energy. They may sound impressive on their own, but inside a mix they often create problems.


Once the arrangement started breathing again, the track finally translated much better to other listening systems.


My biggest recommendation for artists using AI music

Today, when I work with artists who bring AI-generated songs to the studio, I usually recommend the same thing.

If the song is going to be released seriously, it is often worth replacing the AI instruments with MIDI instruments or real sounds.


Yes, it costs a little more.

But I often ask artists one simple question:


If you’re going to release the song, is this really the place where you want to save money?

The flaws might not bother you immediately.But once you learn to hear them, it becomes very difficult to ignore them.
