Why AI Music Still Needs a Producer

AI-generated music is everywhere right now. Songs are being created faster than ever, and almost anyone can generate a track in minutes.


This has completely changed the starting point of music production. The challenge is no longer creating music, but creating something that actually stands out and holds value.


At the same time, streaming platforms have started reacting. The volume of AI-generated content has grown so rapidly that many are already talking about a decline in overall music value. Tools like AI detection systems are being developed quickly to identify AI-generated tracks.


This does not mean AI music is banned. But if a song is uploaded directly from tools like Suno without further production, it is unlikely to perform well. Algorithms tend to push this type of content down, making it difficult for listeners to find it.


Why AI alone is not enough

Many artists have already noticed the same thing. AI-generated music can sound impressive at first, but it often lacks depth, dynamics, and emotional impact. It may not translate well across different listening environments either.


As the market fills up with more content, the value of individual songs decreases. This is often referred to as AI slop, meaning mass-produced content where quantity replaces quality.


This leads to an important question. Why does AI music still need a producer


The role of a producer in AI music

From my perspective as a producer, the direction is very clear. More and more artists are coming to the studio with AI-generated demos.


Typically, the artist has created a track using tools like Suno or Udio and wants to take it further. They want to record real vocals and turn the idea into something that feels authentic and finished.


At this stage, AI is a powerful creative tool, but the actual production work is still ahead.


Turning an AI track into a real song

When an artist brings in an AI-generated track, the process usually starts with rebuilding key elements.


The first step is reviewing the instruments. In most cases, drums, bass, and overall dynamics need improvement. These are often replaced with real instruments or high-quality MIDI production.


Even replacing just the drums and bass can completely transform the track. The groove becomes tighter, the energy improves, and the mix gains clarity.


Next comes arrangement. AI-generated structures do not always support the song properly, so adjustments are made to better serve the vocal and the emotional flow.


Recording real vocals is one of the most important steps. Once the artist performs the song, it immediately starts to feel alive. Production decisions are then made to support the vocal instead of competing with it.


Preserving the original idea

Sometimes the artist is attached to a specific element in the AI version. It could be a guitar part, a melody, or a certain atmosphere.


In these cases, the goal is not to remove everything, but to rebuild it properly.


One effective technique is to clean the original AI audio as much as possible and then re-record it through a real acoustic environment. For example, the sound can be played through a speaker and captured again with a microphone.


This approach helps remove typical AI artifacts while keeping the original idea intact.


Mixing AI-generated music properly


The reality is that AI tracks often require more work than traditional recordings.


Levels are usually unbalanced, transients can be unclear, and the stereo image often lacks depth.


During the mixing stage, a new balance is created for the entire track. This is where the difference between a rough demo and a release-ready production becomes clear.


AI is a tool, not a finished product

AI does not create finished music. It creates raw material that can be surprisingly good, but rarely complete.


When real instruments, proper arrangement, and authentic vocals are added, the track starts to feel and sound like real music.


This is the point where a demo becomes a finished production.


The future is already visible

The amount of AI-generated music will continue to grow. At the same time, the need to stand out will increase.


It is becoming clear that AI will remain a powerful tool for creating ideas and demos, but real value is created during the production process.


This is why the role of a producer is not disappearing. It is becoming more important than ever.
